The CIDER Organization is a large part of the community in the Champlain Islands.  We rely on our volunteers to assist the older adults and the disabled who need rides to medical, dental and other essential appointments.  In addition we have many volunteers who contribute their time helping at our meal site, “The Neighbors”, five days a week.  On Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the lunches at the Congregational Church in South Hero and daily for preparation of the meals for the Meals On Wheels Program.  CIDER also has a lending closet for adaptive equipment, such as wheelchairs, commodes and shower benches.  Another area where we use volunteers is for our Ramp Program.  This is more of a seasonal program where our volunteers build wheelchair ramps when requested and deemed possible.

The lifeline of this organization is our volunteers.  Without them countless people in our community would not be able to make it to medical, dental or other essential appointments, receive warm meals and interaction from community members and the independence to leave their home safely.

And of course we also have our monthly folding of the Newsletter where a group of people get together at the CIDER Office to help assemble the Newsletter for mailing to people in the Island as well as to former Islanders who have moved away.

We can use your help from a few hours a month up to more regular volunteering driving clients to appointments.  If you only have occasional time to help, we are always looking for substitutes to answer our call on an as needed basis.

At this time our biggest need is to increase our volunteer driver roster.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Drivers to take clients to medical appointments.  Reimbursement for mileage is available at the rate of 54.5 cents per mile. (Calculated from when you leave your home and return to your home.  Please inquire.

Substitutes for the Meals on Wheels Program: drivers/deliveries: deliver meals to clients.  We have two routes that are Monday through Friday in South Hero and Grand Isle.  We have one route in the Alburgh that delivers on Tuesday and Thursdays.  We are always looking for people to add to our sub list to cover our regular drivers when they are out.

Meal Site help:  Assist the ladies at the meal site on Monday through Friday, prepping and preparing meals for both the Meals on Wheels Program and at the Meal Site on MW & F, when meals are served.

Accessibility Projects:  AKA wheelchair ramp builders.  No experience required.  Assist our crew to build ramps and/or stairs to help clients to stay in their homes.

Newsletter Folders:  Once a month we gather to fold and mail our newsletter the CIDER Press.  We meet at the CIDER Office for a morning of fun, laughter and a little work.  In addition we have a few annual mailings when we are looking for help as well, on an as needed basis.  We would love to add your name to our list.

For any of these opportunities please call CIDER.  A Substitution List is as important as our regular volunteers, to help us when for a variety of reasons we need coverage.

Please give us a call at 372-6425 to start YOUR volunteer experience.  We can always find an opportunity for you, on a regular basis or as an on-call basis.  We never say NO to anyone who would like to fill an hour a month to several hours a week!
