VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

The CIDER Organization is a large part of the community in the Champlain Islands.  We rely on our volunteers to assist the older adults and the disabled who need rides to medical, dental and other essential appointments.  In addition we have many volunteers who contribute their time helping at our meal site, “The Neighbors”, five days a week.  On Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the lunches at the Congregational Church in South Hero and daily for preparation of the meals for the Meals On Wheels Program.  CIDER also has a lending closet for adaptive equipment, such as wheelchairs, commodes and shower benches.  Another area where we use volunteers is for our Ramp Program.  This is more of a seasonal program where our volunteers build wheelchair ramps when requested and deemed possible.

The lifeline of this organization is our volunteers.  Without them countless people in our community would not be able to make it to medical, dental or other essential appointments, receive warm meals and interaction from community members and the independence to leave their home safely.

And of course we also have our monthly folding of the Newsletter where a group of people get together at the CIDER Office to help assemble the Newsletter for mailing to people in the Island as well as to former Islanders who have moved away.

We can use your help from a few hours a month up to more regular volunteering driving clients to appointments.  If you only have occasional time to help, we are always looking for substitutes to answer our call on an as needed basis.

At this time our biggest need is to increase our volunteer driver roster.

Volunteer Opportunities:  Drivers to take clients to medical appointments.  Reimbursement for mileage is available at the rate of 54.5 cents per mile. (Calculated from when you leave your home and return to your home.  Please inquire.

Substitutes for the Meals on Wheels Program: drivers/deliveries: deliver meals to clients.  We have two routes that are Monday through Friday in South Hero and Grand Isle.  We have one route in the Alburgh that delivers on Tuesday and Thursdays.  We are always looking for people to add to our sub list to cover our regular drivers when they are out.

Meal Site help:  Assist the ladies at the meal site on Monday through Friday, prepping and preparing meals for both the Meals on Wheels Program and at the Meal Site on MW & F, when meals are served.

Accessibility Projects:  AKA wheelchair ramp builders.  No experience required.  Assist our crew to build ramps and/or stairs to help clients to stay in their homes.

Newsletter Folders:  Once a month we gather to fold and mail our newsletter the CIDER Press.  We meet at the CIDER Office for a morning of fun, laughter and a little work.  In addition we have a few annual mailings when we are looking for help as well, on an as needed basis.  We would love to add your name to our list.

For any of these opportunities please call CIDER.  A Substitution List is as important as our regular volunteers, to help us when for a variety of reasons we need coverage.

Please give us a call at 372-6425 to start YOUR volunteer experience.  We can always find an opportunity for you, on a regular basis or as an on-call basis.  We never say NO to anyone who would like to fill an hour a month to several hours a week!

2015 Love Your Neighbors Annual Fund Drive

Monday, January 26th, 2015

C.I.D.E.R.’s 2015 Annual Fund Drive kicks off on February 14th. The tag-line for this Fund Drive is “Love Your Neighbors”.

Grand Isle County is a beautiful and special place to live, but for our rapidly growing population of elders it also presents some significant challenges to their ability to “age in place” with independence and dignity. Access to essential resources and services is limited and often requires a long ride to Burlington, St. Albans, and other locations off-island. Opportunities to enjoy social interaction with others, especially peers, can be difficult to find and result in feelings of social isolation.

Islanders recognized these challenges many years ago and created C.I.D.E.R as the Grand Isle County based and supported organization designed to help their older friends and neighbors continue living in their own homes and communities. Your tax deductible gift to C.I.D.E.R. supports door-to-door transportation, congregate and home delivered meals, exercise and wellness activities, home accessibility projects, socialization opportunities, and the effort to develop an ”on island” housing-with-services option for our frail elders.

Elvis is Coming Back

Monday, March 24th, 2014

ELVIS IS BACK

elvis ovalDonny “Elvis” Romines is coming back to South Hero for a show sponsored by C.I.D.E.R.  Donny, an Elvis Presley tribute singer, will entertain you at the Folsom School on South Street on Saturday, May 31st, from 7:30 to 9:30.  Many of you will remember the hot time last year when Donny Elvis sang up a storm.  Both the weather and the singing was steamy…   Come on out again for an evening of fun.

Donny’s career began when he dressed up as Elvis for a Halloween party and won the contest for the best costume. He has been performing ever since at all types of parties for many different occasions, intimate parties, cruise ships, dinner shows, camp parties and even played in Las Vegas and other casinos around the country.

What started as a one night of fun has continued for 20 years and still going strong. His fans can only hope that he will continue to keep the memory alive and keep giving Elvis the respect and justice he deserves.01-18-10Elvis8

There will be a cash bar and snacks available. So, step back into the mid 50s & 60s, put your blue suede shoes on, comb your hair in a DA, get your head in a rock-a-billy zone and come on out to rock the night away. The doors open at 7:00, and I do not mean that Jim Morrison and the Doors are the opening act for Donny – sorry… Miss this event and you will end up a Hound Dog in the Heartbreak Hotel.

Volunteers Needed – Now More Than Ever

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

Volunteer Services-DriversNow that many of our Summer volunteers have retreated South we are in need of additional folks who would like to help their neighbors get to doctor’s offices and similar destinations.   The ability to pass simple background checks and a clean driving record is all that is required – in addition to a desire to help.  Since July 2013 (the last 5 months) volunteers have provided over 1350 one-way rides to our client base.  During the same time frame our volunteers drove over 44,000 miles taking their Island neighbors to appointments – that’s equivalent to over 14 trips from South Hero to San Francisco.  On one day in October we had 15 volunteers on the road.

Over the last few months we have experienced an influx of ride requests by our fellow islanders and now that winter is upon us the need for volunteers is even greater.  If you would like to help out drop by the C.I.D.E.R. Office (324 US Rt. 2, South Hero) and sign up.  A mileage reimbursement is available if desired.  If additional information is needed feel free to call us at 372-6425 and someone would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Volunteers are also needed to expand our cadre of Meals on Wheels delivery drivers.  C.I.D.E.R. volunteers deliver meals to South Hero and Grand Isle recipients.  We also have folks who take meals to North Hero meals on wheelswhere they are handed off to the C.I.D.E.R. delivery volunteers for Alburgh and Isle La Motte.  Usually our Meals on Wheels volunteers work only one day a week.  If that interests you call us at 372-6425.
